A Father playing with his kids

Low back pain is the leading cause of disability in the world. According to the CDC, over 30% of adults in the US have experienced back pain in the past 3 months, and 80% of US adults will experience back pain in their life.

Low back pain is the second most common reason for a doctor’s visit and the leading cause for missed days at work. The total cost for those suffering from low back pain is staggering; it is estimated that we spend over $50 billion dollars every year on low back pain but the actual cost is thought to be much higher. Long standing low back pain has also become the major cause of opiate addiction which has become an epidemic and public health crisis causing many deaths in Utah every day.

The Cost of Low Back Pain: A Burden We Can’t Afford

It is clear that none of us can afford the cost of low back pain. It is our goal at Cadence Chiropractic to give you the knowledge you need to prevent and treat low back pain while cutting your out of pocket costs and giving you better outcomes.

The low back consists of the Lumbar spine (the bottom five vertebrae of your spine), the Sacrum, and the Sacro-Iliac joints. Pain can come from any of these 3 areas and commonly refers up the back or down the leg. Pain numbness and tingling can even run all the way down into the feet.

Low back pain can come from one of a thousand different underlying issues. You could have disk problems, torn or sprained muscles/ligaments, and even potential fractures.

The most common cause of low back pain is called poor biomechanics. This essentially means that your spine does not move the way that it should. Misalignments such as imbalanced hips and fixations in the joints can cause you to move wrong and put increased stress on the surrounding tissue and nerves.

Understanding the Complexities of Low Back Pain

Low back pain is commonly caused by issues elsewhere in the body as well. Problems in the feet regularly cause low back pain because of changes in the way you walk and stand. It is also very common in our office to see people with problems in the neck that cause problems in the back. This is why it is important to look at the entire person as a whole. Many other healthcare providers will focus only on the low back and miss the cause of the pain, which is why we have so many cases of chronic low back pain. As your premier chiropractor in American Fork, Cadence Chiropractic will focus on you as a whole person and get to the root cause, whatever it may be.

The Role of Underlying Weakness in Low Back Pain

For many people, the underlying weakness has been present for a long time. Research has shown that it can take years for symptoms to develop. Many of us have heard the stories about a friend that bent over to pick up a newspaper but couldn’t stand up again because they “threw their back out”. Picking up a paper is not a trauma, but it can be the last straw that causes an underlying weakness to finally fail. Prevention is key to avoid the loss of time, money, and the loss of your quality of life.

Dispelling Misconceptions about Low Back Pain

There are many misconceptions about low back pain and its causes. The major misconception we have is that low back pain can and should be treated with painkillers and muscle relaxants. Research is consistently showing that this is not true and that there are better options that are longer lasting and more cost-effective. Chiropractic care is at the top of the available options. Chiropractic has been shown to be extremely effective, especially when it comes to long-standing back pain that has failed to respond to other treatments. In fact, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality recommended that chiropractic be one of the very first options for those suffering from low back pain.

Surgical Treatment and Its Limitations

Many others have turned to surgery for the treatment of chronic low back pain. It is estimated that nearly 600,000 people in the USA get back surgery every year. A recent study on the effectiveness of surgery compared to no surgery looked at 1,450 patients in the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation database who had diagnoses of disc degeneration, disc herniation, or radiculopathy, a nerve condition that causes tingling and weakness of the limbs. Half of the patients had surgery to fuse two or more vertebrae in hopes of curing low back pain. The other half had no surgery, even though they had comparable diagnoses.

After two years, just 26 percent of those who had surgery returned to work, compared to 67 percent of patients who didn’t have surgery. In what might be the most troubling study finding, researchers determined that there was a 41 percent increase in the use of painkillers, specifically opiates, in those who had surgery. The study provides clear evidence that for many patients, fusion surgeries designed to alleviate pain from degenerating discs don’t work.

What The Research Says

As stated before our first treatment in the US for low back pain is medication, but is it the right choice? A study performed at the University of Bremen looked at 101 patients with low back pain. The patients were divided into groups to see if the chiropractic adjustment was more effective than NSAID drugs. The research found that the chiropractic group was significantly better than the NSAID group and the research also found no significant side effects to chiropractic care in comparison to NSAIDs which have been proven to have many severe side effects. Proper structure will lead to proper function. A study performed by the University of Otago sports and exercise science program used electromagnetic palpation-digitization to monitor how the hips move on patients with low back pain. The results showed a significantly different movement pattern in those that suffered from low back pain. (2)
